The Tradition of Santa Lucia and the Star Boys.....
St. Lucia's Day is celebrated across Scandinavia on December 13 marking the beginning of the holiday season. St. Lucia (Lucia meaning "light") was a young Christian woman who refused to give up her faith to marry an unbeliever. There are many legends about her and in each one Lucia stands as a symbol of light and hope to all mankind. Santa Lucia's coming begins the feasting, merriment, singing and the spirit of friendliness and goodwill that lasts all through the holidays.
The tradition of the Star Boy originates from Saint Stefanos, or ‘Staffan Stalledräng’. Legend tells us that Stefanos worked in King Herod’s stables and gave the horses water when he saw the Star of Bethlehem. He ran to Herod to tell him that the King of the Jews was born. Herod didn’t believe him at first and then became very angry and frightened and ordered Stefanos to be punished. Stephanos became a saint for suffering the punishments of Herod.
